Can You Advertise on Google for Free? The Free Ways to Show Up

There is no such thing as advertising on Google for free. Opening a Google Ads account costs nothing, but wherever your ad appears with the "Sponsored" label you pay per click or per impression. Promotional credit does not change that, because you spend your own money first.

The good news: there are three genuine ways to show up on Google without paying Google. A Google Business Profile if you serve a local area, Merchant Center free listings if you sell products, and organic search (SEO) if you have a website. None of them is advertising, but all of them bring customers. Our view is simple: the profile and free listings can go live today and cost nothing; if you need customers this month, they will not be enough on their own. Below we explain how far each one gets you and when we move a client on to paid ads.

Can you advertise on Google for free? Which part of the page is free?

Split a Google results page in two. Every line marked "Sponsored" is space for sale; it is sold at auction and the advertiser pays when someone clicks. Everything else, meaning the local map pack, the organic results and the free product cards in the Shopping tab, cannot be bought. The price of getting in there is work and time.

Advertise on Google for free? Paid sponsored slots versus free local, organic and product areas on a results page

Most services sold as "free Google advertising" are really just registrations in that second area. Google charges nothing to create a Business Profile, add a business to Maps or get a website found. Anyone asking you for money for these jobs is a middleman, not Google. Working with one is your call; just know the fee is not an advertising charge from Google.

The only group that can genuinely run ads for free is eligible nonprofits. We cover the Google Ad Grants programme at the end of this article.

Is Google Ads paid? The account is free, the clicks are not

Yes, it is paid. Google Ads has no membership, subscription or setup fee; spending starts when your ad is shown and clicked. On Search you mostly pay per click, and you set the ceiling with a daily budget. A worked example: a daily budget of 200 TL spends at most 200 × 30.4 = 6,080 TL a month. Ads shown in Türkiye also carry a 4.5% regulatory operating cost on top, which comes to roughly 274 TL on 6,080 TL of spend.

Is Google Ads free? Cost status of Business Profile, free listings, SEO, promotional credit, Google Ads and Ad Grants

What a click costs depends on the sector, the city and what competitors bid. We show how to estimate it for your own keywords in our Google Ads pricing article.

Is "free Google Ads credit" free money?

No. Google offers new advertisers promotional credit, but the credit lands in the account only after you have spent a set amount yourself. So it is a spend-first discount, not free advertising. If your campaign is not ready, the money you spend chasing the credit goes on irrelevant clicks and the discount turns into a loss. We worked through today's offers in TL in our Google Ads promotional credit article.

Google Business Profile: add your business to Maps for free

For any business where customers come to you, or you go to them, this is step one: hairdressers, dental clinics, garages, boiler repair, restaurants. Creating a profile and being listed on Google Maps is free. The short list with a map that appears for "hairdresser Kadıköy" or "pharmacy near me" is built from these profiles.

Adding a business to Google Maps for free: search, verify, pick the category, then reviews and photos

Creating a profile takes five minutes; the real work is creating it properly. Search for your business on Maps first, because a customer or Google may already have created a listing for you. If one exists, claim it instead of opening a second; two profiles for one business split your reviews and your searches. Google picks the verification method (phone, email, video and so on) and the review can take up to 5 business days. If you have no storefront and travel to customers, hide the address and set a service area.

The setting we fix most often on local businesses' profiles is the primary category. A clinic that picked "Medical centre" instead of "Dental clinic" starts behind for "dental clinic Kadıköy". Holiday hours come next: a profile that shows "open" on a day you are closed costs you both the customer and the review.

You cannot buy a better position on Maps

Who comes first in the local list depends on relevance, distance and how well known the business is. Google does not accept payment or requests for a better local ranking, and its rules page says so plainly. What you control is complete information, genuine customer reviews, your replies to them and fresh photos. We advise against collecting reviews in exchange for money or discounts; it breaks the rules, the reviews get removed and the profile can be restricted.

Callers who ask for money "on behalf of Google"

Calls warning that "your Maps listing will be deleted" or promising "we will get you to the top" are the best known trap around free visibility. Google does not ask for payment for a profile over the phone and does not promise anyone a special position. Never share your verification code; handing it over means handing over control of your profile.

Once the profile is in shape, appearing at the top of Maps with a "Sponsored" label is a separate, paid step. We explain which campaign we start with and on what TL budget in our Google Maps ads article.

Merchant Center free listings: show your products for free

If you sell products, the second free door is Merchant Center. You connect your product data once (price, image, stock, shipping), and approved products can appear as free cards in the Shopping tab, Google Images and other Google surfaces. Free listings are available in Türkiye and are usually switched on by default for new accounts.

Merchant Center free listings checklist: price match, VAT, returns, shipping, images and stock status

Set your expectations correctly. The priced product cards at the very top of a results page are often paid Shopping ads; free cards appear more in the Shopping tab and lower on the page. What we see in e-commerce accounts is this: free listings are the best way to test, at no cost, whether your product data is clean, while the revenue usually comes from a paid Shopping campaign. Our order is: switch on the free side first, see how many products get approved, and talk about an ad budget after that.

Account setup, product data rules and the most common disapprovals are covered in our Merchant Center and Shopping ads article.

Showing up through SEO: free for Google, not for you

You pay Google nothing to appear in organic results. Google does not sell organic rankings, and advertising does not lift them either. But "free" is misleading here: the cost is the time of whoever writes the content, speeds up the site and fixes technical problems, and results arrive in months, not weeks.

How long free and paid Google visibility takes to work: Google Ads, Business Profile, free listings and SEO

A small business has three clear first jobs. A separate, genuinely useful page for each service (not a one-page "our services" list), a site that loads fast on mobile, and Google Search Console. Search Console is free; it will not move you up, but it shows which searches you appear for and which pages are not indexed. If your site is weak to begin with, website design is the spend that comes before advertising, because paid clicks land on the same page.

We weighed ads against SEO by budget and timeline in our Google Ads vs SEO article. In our view the short version is: start SEO today, but do not make this month's rent depend on organic traffic that may arrive in six months.

Which businesses can get by on free channels, and which cannot?

The shared weakness of free channels is that you are not in control. Google's ranking decides when, for which search and in which position you appear. For some businesses that is fine; for others it is a deal breaker.

Is free Google visibility enough? Our advice for local shops, emergency services, e-commerce, B2B and nonprofits

  • Well-known neighbourhood businesses with plenty of reviews (hairdressers, cafés, pharmacies): a well-kept profile is often enough. We only consider ads when they launch a new service.
  • E-commerce sites: free listings and SEO bring baseline traffic. Sale periods and new products need paid Shopping.
  • Emergency services (locksmiths, boiler repair, plumbers, removals) and new businesses: the customer is searching right now and you cannot wait for organic rankings. Here we recommend a small, tightly targeted Search campaign; it fills the gap the free channels leave and does not replace them.
  • B2B manufacturers and exporters: buyers search with trade terms, often in another language, and organic rankings for those searches take years. We explain how we reach foreign buyers with ads in our international Google Ads article.

So when should you not move to paid ads at all? When your profile is not verified, when the form or click-to-call on your site does not work, and when you cannot put at least a few thousand TL a month into ads. A worked example: on a keyword at 15 TL a click, 3,000 TL a month buys 200 clicks. If 5% of those call, that is 10 phone calls. Do not raise the budget before you know how many of those 10 calls become customers; find the right figure with the method in our budget planning article.

Google recommends it, but: the "Advertise" shortcut in your profile

While managing your Business Profile or the Maps app you will often see an ad prompt: enter a budget and the ad goes live within minutes. Google pushes this route because it has the least friction. But the shortcut puts you into a Smart campaign; you work with themes instead of keywords and cannot manage match types or what you pay for each search in any detail.

We do not launch ads from the profile. We link the profile to the Google Ads account and build a Search campaign with a location asset in Expert Mode. That way the work you put into the free profile pays off in the ads too, while keywords, location and budget stay under our control.

Genuinely free ads for charities and foundations: Google Ad Grants

The only group that can run ads on Google for free is eligible nonprofits. Google Ad Grants gives an approved organisation up to 10,000 US dollars a month in ad budget for text ads on Google Search; unused budget does not roll over. Applications go through Google for Nonprofits. In Türkiye, foundations and associations can apply; government bodies, hospitals, schools and universities cannot.

The free budget comes with strict conditions. The account must keep at least a 5% click-through rate each month, set up conversion tracking and use at least two sitelinks; accounts that break the rules can be suspended. Before applying, we recommend you prepare a measurable goal on your site, such as a donation or volunteer form. Otherwise the budget resets every month and slips away before you can use it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it cost money to add a business to Google Maps?

No. Creating a Business Profile, verifying it, updating details and replying to reviews are all free. You only spend money when you run a Google Ads campaign that uses the profile, and that is ad spend.

Does Google give you a free website?

Not any more. The free websites built with Business Profiles were shut down in March 2024; after a period of redirecting to the profile they were removed completely. Today you need to build your site with another tool and add its address to the profile.

Can you advertise on YouTube for free?

Uploading videos to your own channel and getting organic views is free, but that is not advertising. Ads that play before or between other videos are paid through Google Ads; we cover the formats and budgets in our YouTube ads article.

Is there a way to try Google Ads for free?

There is no trial period. Opening an account, checking click estimates in Keyword Planner and drafting a campaign are free; money starts going out the moment a campaign goes live. The promotional credit offered to new accounts also depends on meeting a spend requirement.

Conclusion

Advertising on Google is always paid; showing up is often free. If you are a local business, fix your profile this week; if you sell products, switch on free listings; if you have a site, set up Search Console. If you cannot wait for customers, a small, measurable Search campaign goes on top of these, not instead of them.

Send us your Business Profile link and we will check the category, hours, service area and photos and tell you what is missing on the free side. If you do need ads, what our management covers is on our Google Ads packages page; the ad budget itself is not included in the fee.
